Patrick Mahomes was sharp for two-and-a-half quarters.

Then, he was out.

A concussion sustained on an option run prematurely ended the Chiefs quarterback's day.

Leading 19-10 and facing third-and-1, Mahomes faked a handoff and scrambled to his right with 7:44 to play in the third quarter of Sunday’s AFC divisional game at Arrowhead Stadium. Browns linebacker Mack Wilson wrapped Mahomes just short of the chains.

Then Mahomes rolled over. He pressed the ground, attempted to stand and instead wobbled, his teammates quick to grasp him until trainers were in place. Mahomes’ eyes appeared out of focus as he walked slowly off the field between trainers.

Patrick Mahomes was hurt late in the third quarter.

A trip to the sideline medical tent and then to the locker room for further concussion evaluation followed.

Mahomes didn’t appear to be hit helmet-to-helmet, though his head was shown snapping backward on Wilson’s tackle. Backup and 13-year veteran Chad Henne entered the game for Mahomes.
